To give credit where credit is due, I just thought I would throw out a little shout out to the fine folks at Dogs at Camp. This is the ‘anti-kennel’ where we have been taking the fur kids this summer when we are away from home.

To say that these guys (er, gals) love dogs is an understatement, and after experimenting with a few traditional kennels around the area before this, there simply is no comparison. The dogs are never locked away, and spend the entire day running around a fenced farmyard with up to 40 other buddies. Then when they are completely played out they have a sleepover with 7 or 8 others in huge comfy horse stalls on sawdust.

The facility is impeccably clean and dry, the staff is awesome, and the owner Cheryl knows all of the campers by name. I just dropped Harvey and Lloyd off this morning, and it goes a long way to say that this was Harvey’s first visit (Lloyd’s third) and he ran off without a glance backwards at me. Incredibly different from the first (and last) time we put him in a kennel when I had to physically haul him into the concrete cage so we could close the door.

Anyway, it’s easy to complain about a bad service or business, but recognition of a job truly well done is a bit harder to come by. These folks are the real deal, and they will take top notch care of your dog without a doubt in my mind.

Check ‘em out and tell them Lloyd sent ya.

I am the foster co-ordinator for the Animal Guardian Society in Durham Region, Ontario. Recently I took advantage of the Foster Camper Program with Dogs at Camp in Uxbridge. I am involved at times in the rescue and transport of dogs from various pounds in the Southern U.S., primarily Kentucky. I received a frantic call from my contact who asked if I could take two highly adoptable young dogs into our rescue who were going to be ‘put down’ the next day. Of course, I said yes, even though I had no foster homes to put them into.

I emailed Glen at Dogs at Camp and asked if he could take them for me until a foster home opened up. Glen graciously gave us an appointment to bring both dogs up to meet everyone. We drove Turner, an 8 month old Lab mix and Hootch, a 1 year old Lab/Sharpei mix to meet with Glen and his staff the day after they arrived from Kentucky. Both passed the socialization test and were warmly welcomed by all the staff and all the other dogs! Needless to say, if the Foster Camper Program had not been available for our rescue’s use, we would not have been able to save these two dogs.

The staff was super and our dogs were well looked after during their month+ stay. I am happy to report that Turner has just been adopted by a wonderful family and Hootch is scheduled for a home visit that will hopefully lead to his “fur-ever home”. Glen has offered to help us whenever he can through the Foster Camper Program ands we will be sure to make good use of the offer.

Thanks, Dogs At Camp, for helping us save two wonderful dogs!!! TAGS and I looks forward to seeing you again.

After 7 months, Indigo (or Indy as we call him) has finally been adopted! He will remain in the Dogs at Camp family as Barry Caswell, the uncle of the owner of Dogs at Camp Ottawa, has adopted him and moved him to Thunder Bay. There he will have an older husky brother, Loki, and a 3 year old husky sister, Tia, so he will fit into the family perfectly.

Barry lives on a rural property surrounded by forest so he plans to train Indy to run free with lots of hikes in the forest and by the river. Indy is on his way to having a really good life and we couldn’t be happier. We already miss him at camp but this is the perfect family for him.

Lincoln is the latest Dogs at Camp Foster camper to find a home. He was with us at Dogs at Camp Uxbridge for about five weeks. During that time he endeared himself to our staff, and we miss him already.

But he has found a wonderful home with a loving and caring family, and we’ve had great reports back about what a pleasure he’s been to have, and how well he’s settling in to his new home.

We all wish Lincoln and his new family all the best!
